Kalgoorlie to The Nullarbor

Kalgoorlie

Headed north to warmer and dryer country … well at least we got 2 days of nice weather before it started to pour again. Spent a couple of days exploring the area, including a day trip out to Lake Ballard.

Rudest road sign I’ve ever seen … Lake Ballard is a salt lake 51km from Menzies and has 51 statues depicting 51 characters from the town of Menzies … not sure if I would like to be depicted in such a manner.
Jane’s new friend.
Lorraine being a twit.
We had to walk miles to get to each statue so needless to say we didn’t check out all 51 of them.

Kalgoorlie was an interesting place especially at the caravan park we stayed at … lots of single men so girls if you want one all you have to do is pack your bags and head to Kalgoorlie. Truth be told Jane and I were relieved when we were heading out of town.

The options for what to do in Kalgoorlie were interesting … brothel tours, red light district tours, single men’s quarters tour, go to a pub and meet the local skimpies (girls with very little on) … I don’t think so. In the end we decided to spend a day at the Miners Hall of Fame and we were both surprised at how interesting it was.

Old mine buildings.
A miner’s shack … and that’s if you were lucky some of the other types of accommodation were more primitive.
Jane in the lift going down to an old gold mine … when it was a working mine they used to squeeze in 12 men in that little yellow box.
Jane in the mine.
Went to the super pit lookout and wow what a huge hole … apparently they are in the final stages of retrieving the gold from this location and will soon start reclaiming the land that the Kalgoorlie town resides on. Now that will be an interesting little exercise of relocating the town. Didn’t get to do the tour of the super pit as the bloke that runs it was ill ,,, typical of our luck.

The Nullarbor

Well Jane enjoyed the drive but Lorraine got bored as it was miles and miles of not much.

It did have the longest straightest stretch of road in Australia and the biggest trucks.
Beware of animals signs sparked some interest … camels where???

Now this is more like it … how does one pass this especially when it is not going to slow down for anybody and is traveling at 80km/hr.
Go Jane!
The first night we stayed at the Caiguna roadhouse … spent a couple of hours in the nice warm roadhouse watching the tv (Jane keen to watch the time trial of the tour de france) and talking to the roadhouse staff.
Second night stayed at Eucla roadhouse.

Old East-West telegraph station at Eucla being buried by sand.
Shags on the old jetty that used to service the Eucla area.
Eucla sunset.
The Bunda cliffs at the various lookouts.

Luckily we didn’t stay at the Nullarbor roadhouse especially with signs like this … ummm are they worried they are going to break off into the Southern Ocean or something?

Now the best part of the Nullarbor experience … the Head of the Bight where there were heaps of mother whales with little ones very close to shore.

Mum having fun on her back.
That white patch is baby having a roll.
Mum steering baby in another direction.
White sand dunes in the distance.
